You’ve been sitting in the dental office for just 5 minutes, and you can’t stop fidgeting and milling your hands. As soon as the front desk manager calls your name, your palms begin to sweat. The lights seem to brighten, and your stomach instantly turns into a knot.

Does this sound like you? If so, we completely feel for you. Dental phobia is one of the most common fears in the country, and it prevents millions of people from getting the care they need each year. We want to be able to help these kinds of patients, which is why we offer sedation dentistry. Thanks to these techniques, Dr. Meredith Davis and our team can calm both your nerves AND your mind so you can take care of your teeth in peace.

Oral Conscious Sedation

Woman in dental chair with eyes closedIf just the thought of going to the dentist makes you feel skittish, then oral conscious sedation may be right for you. Dr. Davis will prescribe you an oral sedative to take the day of your appointment (probably while you’re still at home) so you can enjoy an anxiety-free visit. Most people say it feels like they are wrapped in a warm blanket, and minutes often feel like seconds. You’ll still be awake and able to respond to the doctor, but many people leave our office with little or no memory of the procedure at all (which is perfect for some patients!).

Nitrous Oxide Sedation

Inside of an oxygen maskThis method of sedation is best for patients who are only slightly nervous about visiting the dentist. Also known as “laughing gas,” nitrous oxide creates a light, almost floating feeling that will minimize any possible discomfort you may feel during a procedure. You’ll breathe in the odorless gas through a small mask placed on your nose, and after you are finished, it will be removed and you’ll feel completely normal again within minutes.

IV Sedation

Smiling young woman in dental chairWe use IV sedation for patients with extreme dental fear, those who want multiple procedures performed in one visit, or patients who have difficulty sitting for an entire appointment (such as those with neck or back problems). This is our most powerful and fastest acting sedation method, and it can even be adjusted during your procedure to make sure you are always completely comfortable. Our team is specially trained to use this approach, and we will keep an eye on your vital signs while you are sedated to make sure you are perfectly safe at all times.

Are you avoiding getting dental care because of fear? Are you nervous about your next appointment? In either case, sedation dentistry can be a massive help. We’ll never judge you for being scared, and in fact, we’ll praise you for overcoming your anxiety and taking care of your health. If you think sedation dentistry could help you finally stop dreading a visit to the dentist, simply contact us today and let us know.
